PAN

A term used in broadcasting and recording to indicate a spatial movement of a SIGNAL. A sound is panned when it is moved smoothly from one location (e.g. LOUDSPEAKER or CHANNEL) to another. This is accomplished by using various ATTENUATORs or POTENTIOMETERs, sometimes combined into a single unit called a pan-pot or panoramic divider in order to control the AMPLITUDE of the signal in each channel.

ULTRASONIC

Sound at frequencies above the audible range, namely above 20 kHz, audible only to various non-human species. Because of its very short WAVELENGTH in the megahertz range, ultrasound is used as a safe alternative to X-ray photography in medical diagnosis. Ultrasound scanning is sometimes called sonography.

OSCILLATION

Any quantity or body is in a state of oscillation when its value or motion is continually changing so that it passes through maximum and minimum values or positions. When a system, body or quantity is set in PERIODIC motion or vibration, it is said to be in oscillation.

TONE

A single sound of definite, recognizable PITCH. It also refers to the SONORITY or the quality of TIMBRE of a particular sound or sounding instrument. In British musical usage the word is also employed to refer to the INTERVAL of a major SECOND.
