EAR CLEANING: Any process that encourages a person to listen more discriminately, particularly to sounds of the environment. The term was originally used by R.M. Schafer in his book Ear Cleaning (Toronto, BMI Canada, 1967) to contrast with the traditional practice of ear training in music education which concentrates on the identification and reproduction of intervals, chords, melodies and so on.
PHASE: The stage that a particle in vibration has reached in its CYCLE. Particles are in phase when they are at the same stage in the cycle at the same time, and out of phase when they are at opposite stages. Phase is measured by the angle of rotation, in degrees or radians.
WAVELENGTH: For any PERIODIC wave the wavelength is the distance from a given point in the wave to the corresponding point in the next cycle of the wave, frequently represented by the Greek letter lambda. It may also be thought of as the distance the sound travels in one CYCLE or PERIOD.
OSCILLATION: Any quantity or body is in a state of oscillation when its value or motion is continually changing so that it passes through maximum and minimum values or positions. When a system, body or quantity is set in PERIODIC motion or vibration, it is said to be in oscillation.
