MONOPHONIC

(Greek: monos = one; phone = sound) A form of reproduction which records, transmits and reproduces the original sound along a single CHANNEL, regardless of the number of loudspeakers used. All components of the sound are combined or MIXed into one SIGNAL, including AMBIENCE and REVERBERATION, and therefore only the sense of depth may be simulated or reproduced.

AUDIO FREQUENCY

Any FREQUENCY in the audible RANGE, usually between 20 and 20,000 Hz, and often referring to the frequency of AUDIO signals. Also called the audio spectrum.

TAPE RECORDER

The device, successor to the MAGNETIC WIRE recorder, which since the 1940s (when it was called the sound mirror) has been the most commonly used means of storing and reproducing an AUDIO signal.

EAR CLEANING

Any process that encourages a person to listen more discriminately, particularly to sounds of the environment. The term was originally used by R.M. Schafer in his book Ear Cleaning (Toronto, BMI Canada, 1967) to contrast with the traditional practice of ear training in music education which concentrates on the identification and reproduction of intervals, chords, melodies and so on.
